Colin McRae, former world rally champion, died yesterday, along with his 5 year old son and two other people when the helicopter he was flying crashed near his home in Lanark, Scotland.
Colin was the first ever British World Rally Champion, winning the competition in 1995, and gave his name to a very successful series of driving games, the latest of which is Colin McRae’s DiRT. The Colin McRae series of rally driving games are the best selling rally games of all time and serve well as a monument to his love of the sport and flamboyant driving style.
Colin McRae was born in 1968 to Jimmy and Margaret. Rallying seems to have been in his genes, his father having won 5 British Rally Championships, and his brother Alister also enjoying success in the sport. Colin was also due to race his self-developed McRae R4 rally car later this year.
Our thoughts are with the wife and daughter he leaves behind, and hope that wherever he is now he’s going really fast.
Colin McRae, 1968-2007
