The video game industry has had a rough year so far. Everyone knows that. What you might not be aware of, however, is that the digital sector of this great industry (which includes things such as full downloadable games, DLC, subscription fees, and mobile/social games) is actually doing better than the retail, disc-based games market. For the April-June quarter, the NPD Group estimates that digital revenues were $1.47 billion, as opposed to the roughly $1 billion that the retail market made.
-Nick’s take: The NPD Group notes that overall revenues for the quarter were still down 16 percent, but digital sales should continue to provide some positive growth for the industry going forward.
