After a goof by EA all but confirmed its existence last week, Crysis 3 has been officially announced today. The game sounds like a cross between the first Crysis and Crysis 2, with players taking control of Prophet–the protagonist from Crysis 2–as he explores New York City once again. This time, however, NYC has been encased in a Nanodome that effectively turns New York City into a jungle environment similar to the first game’s island. This new interpretation of New York City is split into seven distinct areas called the Seven Wonders. Prophet is apparently seeking revenge against the Cell Corporation and will use a variety of all-new alien- and nanosuit tech to enact his revenge. According to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, “Crysis 3 is a thrilling mix of sandbox gameplay, advanced combat and hi-tech human and alien weaponry that shooter fans will love.”
A number of preorder exclusive incentives were also announced for Crysis 3 that focus on the game’s multiplayer component. Crysis 3 will come to PC and “consoles” next year.
-Nick’s take: Crysis 2 was a disappointment for me; the game restricted player freedom more than the first game did and didn’t wow me with its graphics. Hopefully, Crysis 3 will play more like the first game, although the graphics probably won’t receive much of a bump over Crysis 2‘s.
