Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a bona fide cult horror hit.

Indie developer Frictional Games has revealed that surprise horror hit Amnesia:  The Dark Descent has sold nearly 1.4 million copies.  Not all of the buyers purchased the game at full price–some of them came from the Humble Indie Bundle and Steam’s Potato Sack Reunion sale–but Amnesia continues to sell well at full price.  Frictional Games notes that, “Not counting any discounts, the monthly full price sales lie at over 10,000 units. This means that less than every 5th minute someone in the world is buying a copy of Amnesia.”

Amnesia will be getting a sequel titled Amnesia:  A Machine for Pigs in early 2013, but Frictional is only producing that game (thechineseroom are the developers).  Frictional is working on a “super secret” new project, but the only details it’s willing to share about the project are that it will be a first-person horror game.

-Nick’s take:  Amnesia:  The Dark Descent shows the power that good word of mouth can have for a game.
